Jan 29, 2011

The Prime Minister Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y. Thinely promised that there will be a bridge over the Mao River in Gelephu. Speaking at the midterm review meeting on Thursday, he said the construction could not be realised because of budget constraints. However, he said the promise will be fulfilled.

The river does not pose much problem in the winter. People and vehicles can easily cross the river. But come monsoon, the river swells leaving the people in four geogs almost cut off from rest of the country throughout the season.

The review meeting also assessed the 10th five year plan development activities. The Dzongkhag has achieved 43 percent of the planned activities so far. The dzongkhag has achieved 85 percent rural water supply and 76 percent health coverage.

The Dzongkhag, Prime Minister said, has the potential to develop economically and grow into a major town.

The meeting also discussed issues like shortage of engineers, the monsoon disrupting the construction activities and shortage of contractors to carry out the development works.
