Annual judiciary report

The judiciary saw a record 7,771 matrimonial cases in 2010, an increase of 34.06 percent over the previous year. Cases related to financial matters came second at 1,842 cases.

A total of 12, 245 cases were registered in 2010, an increase of 17 percent compared to 2009.

The courts also saw 1,935 spillover cases from 2009.

District wise, Thimphu tops the list with 1,832 cases. Paro came second with 1,004 cases. Phuntsholing recorded the third highest with 986 cases.

According to the annual report, the judiciary decided 12,518 cases. Of that 9,643 were decided within 108 days while 1, 836 cases were decide within a year.

223 cases were appealed to the High Court and six cases were appealed to the Supreme Court. There are 1,689 pending cases. Of the total, 140 cases had been pending for more than a year. Haa does not have any pending case.

Including the High Court and Supreme Court, there are 37 courts in the country.
