Jigme Losel Primary School wins Race against Waste competitionFifteen Schools under Thimphu Thromde have collected a total of 53,784 kilograms of Pet bottles and paper waste in more than two months. They have been participating in ‘Race against Waste’ competition. The Race against Waste competition is initiated by the Druk Green Power Corporation as part of their ‘Being Green Initiative’.

The schools collected pet bottles and paper wastes from September till November, this year. The wastes, they collected, were then handed over to the Greener Way for recycling.

An award ceremony for the schools that collected the maximum wastes was held today.

The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay awarded the cash prizes and certificates.

The prizes were based on waste collected per student. Jigme Losel Primary School won the competition and was awarded a cash prize of Nu.50,000. Rinchen Kuenphuen Primary School came in second place and won Nu.30,000. The Third place went to Zilon Namgayling School. They took home a cash prize of Nu.20,000.

Other participating schools were awarded Nu.5,000 each.  The schools also received cash from the Greener Ways for the recyclable wastes they contributed.

The Managing Director of DGPC, Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, said Race against Waste Competition is part of their Being Green Initiative. He added that such initiative is to create awareness on the need to protect river catchment areas through proper waste management for sustainable harnessing of hydro power.

Under the initiative, the DGPC also create awareness through advocacy messages on TV and radios and cleaning Chubachu Stream once a month, among others.
