Students teach farmers the art of growing cardamom

plant-Farmers from the locality come to learn the art of growing cardamom from the students of Tali Community Primary School in Zhemgang. The school has been growing cardamom since 2010. They have cultivated cardamom in about one acre of land under its agriculture programme activities.

The School’s Principal, Shankar Gurung, said they started growing cardamom after taking into account fertility of the soil and favorable climatic condition. “We cultivated on trial basis and the outcome is good. We are thinking of selling about 60 kilograms of cardamom.” He said a kilogram of cardamom would fetch Nu.800 and that the school would be earning about Nu. 50,000.

Seeing the success of this little project, the farmers were encouraged to learn the art of growing cardamom from the students.

Sonam Tashi, a villager from Tali village, said this is the first time they are undergoing training on how to cultivate cardamom.  “It looks like it will be one of the potential cash crops.”

“Unlike other crops, this is less likely to be ravaged by wild animals. We are now planning to cultivate cardamom,” said another villager, Rinchen Norbu.

The school, with just 13 students, is also involved in fishery, hazelnut and walnut plantations.
