An age-old mode of transportation still serves its purpose

horseHorses have been an important mode of transportation in the remote gewog of Bjoka under Zhemgang dzongkhag for generations. Almost every household in the gewog owns one or more horses. Even today, despite a farm road that is under construction, it continues to serve as an important mode of transportation.

When the construction of the 31 kilometer farm road to Bjoka gewog centre began in 2010 people of the gewog were happy and excited. They started selling their horses that served them well for generations, thinking they will not need it anymore.

“Owning horses has decreased with the construction of farm road. Some people have sold it to people living further away from road point,” said a resident of Bjoka Gewog, Sherab Jamphel.

He said he realized the farm road as of now is of no use to them.  They now hire horses and use them to transport goods.

The villager also said horses are a reliable mode of transportation throughout the year while the movement of vehicles can be restricted by road blocks.

During winter it can be used for carrying oranges from far flung places where there is no road connectivity and during summer it can be used to carry rations and loads when there is road block,” said Sherab Jamphel.

Horses may lose its value once the gewog is connected with the farm road but for those people living far away from the gewog centre, it will continue to play an important role.
