Development activities elude one of the oldest schools

schoolKengkhar Lower Secondary School celebrated its golden jubilee, yesterday. Although, it was a remarkable event in the school’s journey, 50 years on, the school has seen little development. The slow progress isn’t really the fault of the school; the problem is more with its location, say locals.

Kengkhar Lower Secondary School was shifted to the present site in 1978. When the school was opened in 1963, it was located at Kengkhar Nagtshang- where the Gewog office stands, today.

“When it started, the school had till class three, and later it was upgraded to class six.  We would have seen more up-gradation had it not been for acute shortage of drinking water,” said one of the villager’s Ata Chelu.

Kengkhar School was upgraded to class 6 in1978 and it became a lower secondary school only in 2008.

The remoteness of the area is seen as being the main hindrance to the school’s development.  There has been development, but it has been slow. There was phase-wise construction of classrooms and an administrative block during the 10th five year plan and the principal of the school shares only the supply of electricity is a major problem now.

“When compared to earlier times, the school has seen improvement. It has been upgraded to class eight, has road connectivity, and adequate school materials,” said the school’s Principal, Sangay Dorji.

Kengkhar School is among the oldest schools in Mongar Dzongkhag.
