Could a book carnival get students to read books? Dechencholing Middle Secondary School in Thimphu appears to believe so. The school’s literary club began the book carnival, last year, to commemorate the Royal Wedding and is now being turned into an annual event.
Although, the entire school from PP to class ten is involved, it is the Class Nine students who make the book presentations.
Harry Potter was the book picked, this year. Students, dressed as characters in the book, are judged by teachers on their diction and comprehension skills and prizes are awarded to the best.
The Bank of Bhutan is sponsoring this year’s prizes. The school hopes to organize the carnival on a bigger scale from next year, onwards.
