Democracy on a firm footing, says Foreign Minister at UNGA

FM-RinzinDorje-UNGAThe second parliamentary elections were yet another milestone on the path of democracy that Bhutan chose to undertake five years ago. This was asserted by the Foreign Minister Rinzin Dorje in the 68th session of the UN General Assembly, in New York, yesterday.

Addressing at the UN General Assembly, the foreign minister emphasised that democracy must go beyond elections and that Bhutan will continue to work towards strengthening democratic institutions and culture.

The minister underscored that democracy in Bhutan is irreversible and on a firm footing. Speaking on the need for the United Nations to address contemporary challenges ranging frompeace and security to development, Lyonpo called on the international community to make every effort to strengthen the role and efficacy of a United Nations that is just, democratic, representative, and allows space for its members, including its smallest, to participate fully in its work.

Earlier today, Lyonpo participated in the 12th Annual Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Group of Landlocked and Least Developed Countries.

On Sunday, Lyonpo attended in the 13th Annual Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Least Developed Countries.

As a member of both the groups, Lyonpo emphasized the importance of international support and cooperation in enabling developing countries to succeed with their last mile efforts to achieve the MDGs.

He said that the special needs and priorities of Least Developed Countries and of Landlocked and Least Developed Countries must be mainstreamed and adequately reflected in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
