Workshop on Media and Judiciary ends

Media,Ethics-and-JudiciaryTo bring the media and judiciary closer, a three day workshop on Media, Ethics and Judiciary was held in the capital. The workshop ended today.

The resource person Dr. Venkat Iyer, who is a Senior Lecturer with the University of Ulster, spoke on how the judiciary should support media. Dr.Iyer, who also advised the Bhutan government on Bhutan Media Law, said understanding the ethics and system of each institution is a way to bridge the gap between judiciary and media.

The problems between the two bodies were also tabled for discussion. Apart from ethical challenges faced by the media professionals in the country, there was a discussion on how judiciary should work constructively with the media.

The workshop saw around 30 participants including media and legal professionals.

During the closing, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Christina Carlson, said a good working relationship between the two, based on mutual respect and understanding can help ensure a balance of informing the public and administering justice.

Towards the end of the workshop, the participants were awarded certificates by the information and communications minister, D.N. Dhungyel.

The workshop was organised by the Department of Information and Media in collaboration with the UNDP.
