Chhuzanggang’s water woes

chuzergangWaterShortageResidents in Chhuzanggang Gewog in Gelegphu are facing shortage of drinking water. At present drinking water in the Gewog is supplied by the nearby Chiwog from another Gewog, Sherzhong Gewog. The residents said it would be convenient if the Gewog had a permanent water source.

The Gewog Mangmi of Serzhong, Ugyen Tshering, said they are also facing the shortage. “We have to supply to our school, BHU, Chhuzanggang’s Sansari bazaar and other offices. We have small water source that almost gets dried in winter. Water is insufficient for the people of our own Gewog.”

Since the water supply is limited, residents try to store as much as they can from the little water they receive from the nearby village. A resident, Rinchen Yangzom, said it becomes even more difficult when they perform annual religious ceremony or guests visiting them. “Right now we have timing for water supply. We get from six in the morning till twelve in the afternoon and then from three again.

“If government could provide us a different source it would be better as it would solve water problem of ours as well as theirs because in future the problem is bound to become severe,” added Rinchen Yangzom.

Earlier it used to be sufficient, remembers Nidup. He agreed that it could be because of the increasing population and number of households. “It would be much convenient if we could be provided water from Taklai water source.”

Meanwhile, water problem will continue until the completion of the Taklai irrigation project. Till then the residents of Chhuzanggang will have to adjust with the water supply from the neighboring Chiwog.
