Cabinet’s first sitting lifts pedestrian day

PED-DAy--LiftedThe first sitting of the Cabinet today decided to lift the pedestrian day with immediate effect. The decision came following a discussion that Pedestrian Day gave problems to general public especially in times of emergency and affected the business community.

However, the pedestrian day shall continue to be observed on June 5 every year coinciding with the World Environment Day.

According to press release the Cabinet, however, applauded the initiative taken by the former government. “It appreciated the objectives and rationale behind introducing the Pedestrian Day.”

The Cabinet further instructed the relevant Ministries to come up with advocacy programmes to promote and create awareness on living healthy lifestyles and preserving the environment.

The Cabinet also invited suggestions and proposals from the public, if any, and bring it to the notice of the Cabinet Secretariat for submission to the Lhengye Zhungtshog.

The pedestrian day was a policy decision of the former government and was observed on the first Sunday of every month. It was first implemented on 5 June, 2012.
