Burglars caught in the act

Dec 30, 2010

Thimphu police have apprehended three young men in connection with a series of burglaries in the capital. Two of the men, both 17 years old, were caught red handed as they were burgling a residence in Motithang early yesterday morning.

The third suspect who is 19 years old was arrested later.

According to police, the suspects have confessed to burgling several houses and offices in Zilukha, Changzamtog, Changangkha, Motithang, Kawanjangsa and Jungshina areas in Thimphu.

The two burglars were arrested at around 3 am yesterday morning after a resident in an apartment building called the police complaining about unusual noise from a top floor apartment. The complainant could not go upstairs as his door was latched from outside. He called one of his relatives who came and unlatched his door. Then he went upstairs and latched the door of the apartment from outside. The suspects, realising that their door was latched, jumped from the four storied building. Although one managed to jump, the other fell and broke his spine.

By then police arrived on the scene and arrested the two burglars.

The injured burglar is currently undergoing treatment at the national referral hospital.

Upon interrogation, they revealed the names of their friends.

Police also recovered several items including laptops, cameras, phones, jewellery, electronics and cash in both Bhutanese and foreign currencies which they have apparently looted over the last one month.

Police are now on the lookout for a fourth suspect.
