Accident kills 9 injuring 27 others

In another tragic incident this morning, nine people were killed in a bus accident on the Wangdue-Thimphu highway. The accident has left another 27 injured.

The accident took place between Lamperi and Dochula at around 9:30 am.

Eight died on the spot and one succumbed to injuries at the national referral hospital in Thimphu.

The bus was heading from Wangdue to Thimphu. The other passengers are currently undergoing treatment at the national referral hospital.

Following the accident, His Majesty the King visited the hospital emergency room and met with the families and relatives and consoled the injured passengers.

Of the 27 patients that were brought to the national referral hospital this morning, three are in critical condition. These include a 49-year-old woman with multiple fractures, a 18-year-old boy with spleen rupture and a 19-year-old boy with severe head injury.

Most patients according to the hospital, suffered fractures. Six have been discharged and the other 17 patients are in stable condition said the Medical Director Dr. Ngawang Tenzin.

Speaking to BBS about the tragic incident, the Home and Cultural Affairs Minister paid condolences to the family members of the victims. Lyonpo Minjur Dorji thanked His Majesty the King, the Gyalpoi Zimpoen’s office, the hospital management and all those involved in safely rescuing the injured and rushing them to the hospital. Lyonpo also urged motorists to drive in accordance with traffic rules and regulations to avoid mishaps in the future.
