A dismal turnout

A-dismal-turnoutThe first gewog zomdu for the National Council elections in Sarpang Dzongkhag started from Yarpheling chiwog under Senggye Gewog, yesterday. The meeting saw a poor turn out with only 125 of the 1099 eligible voters.

One of the officials said the poor public participation in the zomdu is because not many eligible voters live in the villages.

Although the turnout was low, but the level of awareness and understanding about elections and the voting procedure among those who turned up have improved, according to our bureau correspondent, Eshori Gurung.

Senggye gewog has a total population of 1,524 of which 1099 are eligible to vote in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, the Samtse Dzongkhag election office has begun its zomdu elections to select its National Council nominee. Samtse has seven aspiring NC candidates. There is no female candidate contesting in the elections. The Samtse Election official, Pema Dorji, says Samtse has about 45,000 eligible voters, this year, according to their draft electoral roll. It is an increase of at least 3000 voters when compared to 2008 figures.
