Private TV station promoter files case against BICMA

UgenTshechup-DorjiThe promoter of a private television station has filed a case against the Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority with the media tribunal appellate.

The case was filed following BICMA’s delay and denial to issue a license for a TV station.

The promoter of the TV station called Thimphu TV, UgenTshechup Dorji, said they had been asked to file an elaborate Expression of Interest, and had  attended  several rounds of meetings with BICMA. From the four EOIs, Thimphu TV, and the Tashi group had met all the criteria.

According to the letter issued by  BICMA, the two applicants were denied licenses in the absence of a BICMA Act.

Ugen Tshechup said the delay has caused financial losses, and he would like to be reimbursed.

He shared with BBS that it would have been advantageous if the licenses had been issued prior to the elections as revenue could be generated during the election period for expansion to other Dzongkhags.

BBS has contacted the office of BICMA for comments but even after weeks, BBS is yet to receive a response.
