Gol tenants in Phuentsholing asked to vacate

GolBuildingEleven private tenants of the Gol building in Phuentsholing who were notified by the National Housing Development Corporation to vacate their apartments have not been able to in spite of repeated deadline extensions- the last of which was at the end of February.

The tenants were asked to vacate their apartments to make space for middle and lower income civil servants. While three of the eleven have found apartments to shift to, the others have not been as successful.

The three who have found apartments are facing challenges. One of them, Tshering, who found accommodation across the border in Jaigaon says he has been asked to pay his rent using the Indian rupee, and even though he has booked space, he has no idea how he will manage in the long run.

Of the eleven cases, two have been considered by the NHDC: one is that of a widow and the other, orphans. For the rest, the hunt for an apartment is still on.

The court and the NHDC have jointly decided to wait till today for the rest of the tenants to move out.

If the tenants fail to vacate, the situation will be dealt with as per the agreement signed between the NHDC and the tenants.
