Mass deaths of pigeons not caused by Bird Flu

MassDeath-Pigeon-Not-BirdFluThe recent mass deaths of pigeons in and around Thimphu are not due to Bird Flu, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests confirms.

162 dead pigeons from various areas in Thimphu were tested at the National Centre for Animal Health, and samples were also referred to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory in Bhopal, India, which is the World Health Organisation of Animal Health’s regional reference laboratory.MassDeath-Pigeon-Not-BirdFlu.

The results show that the mass deaths have occurred due to mixed bacterial (E.Coli and Salmonella) and parasitic (Coccidiosis and Ascaridiosis) infection.

The Ministry has requested people to not be alarmed as the episode does not pose any serious threat to humans, and people are advised not to handle the carcasses of pigeons directly, and to inform the Ministry (toll free number: 124) and BAFRA (155) for any poultry deaths.
