The Gelephu domestic airport is likely to be operational by the end of March. The airport was inaugurated on October 25, last year. But, it could not be used as the complete infrastructures were not in place.
The construction of the security fences is underway. The airport will have two types of fencing, permanent and temporary. The permanent one will be constructed along the Gelephu-Sarpang Highway. It will be about 1,700 metres long and 2.5 metres high.
The temporary fencing is being constructed to stop the animals from entering the airport when the flights are taking off or landing at the airport. Works on the drainage system will also begin soon.
Flight to and from the Gelephu domestic airport is likely to become operational by the end of next month. Flying time from Paro to Gelephu is about 25 minutes and the one-way fare will come to about US$ 170.
The airport has been constructed on an area spanning over 500 acres in Samtenling Gewog, about three kilometres from Gelephu town.
