BBS launches new Dzongkha radio channel

BBSRadio2ndChannelBhutan Broadcasting Service today launched a new Dzongkha radio channel yesterday. The channel two will go on air 24 hours.

Even to this day, radio plays an instrumental role in disseminating timely information, especially in the rural areas. The launch of the new Dzongkha channel is expected to further speed up the dissemination of information and provide a choice to the listeners.

The new channel will have round the clock programmes, news and current affairs. Programmes covering education and health among others will be aired.

Radio in Bhutan was first started in1973, by a group of young enthusiastic volunteers called- National Youth Association of Bhutan (NYAB). Then, it was just 30 minutes news and music on Sunday.

In 1986, Radio NYAB was renamed Bhutan Broadcasting Service Radio, under the then Ministry of Communications.

From three hours of broadcast in 1980s, BBS Radio today broadcast 24 hours daily in four regional languages.
