Denchukha Gewog turning to cardamom plantation

Denchukha-cardamom-plantationGiven the sheer shortage of man-power in Denchukha Gewog under Samtse, the farmers are switching to cardamom plantation instead.

The gewog, otherwise, has favourable conditions for intensive farming.  It has 573 acres of wetland. There is enough water to cater to every household’s cultivation. It also has good climatic condition to grow any kind of vegetables and crops.

But many people have migrated to urban areas in search of better lives. A few left behind prefer working in construction project rather than farm work.

A farmer in Denchukha, Rinchen Namgay, said cardamom plantation fetches more income than other form of farming. He said one person in their village started the plantation and the rest followed.

Another villager, Nima, said even if they want to take up other forms of cultivation, which are mostly labour-intensive, dearth of labourers makes it difficult.
