Not water under the Bridge?

OL-on-LangchenphuBridgeIn the question hour session of the National Assembly, today, the Opposition Leader questioned the government about the Langchenphu Bridge in Lhuentse which collapsed prior to its completion on January 15.

The Opposition Leader, Tshering Tobgay, said it is a matter of concern that the bridge collapsed in spite of the involvement of experts from the Construction Development Corporation.  He also questioned the safety of other bridges, while asking about the financial losses incurred by the government and questioning its accountability. The issue regarding safety of workers was also raised.

The Works and Human Settlement Minister, Yeshey Zimba, responded that the bridge was constructed as per the construction norms of experts, and the experts should not be held accountable for such incidences. He highlighted that the experts have built more than 40 bridges, and not a single mishap was reported.

Lyonpo also informed the house that the bridge was rebuilt in a week’s time. Heavy vehicles were made to ply over the bridge to check its safety as well.

Over three hundred thousand ngultrum was spent rebuilding the bridge.
