Fish farming, a lucrative business for Bertey Group

FishFarming-Bertey-ZhemgangCommunity fish farming is turning out to be a lucrative business option for the villagers in Bertey in Zhemgang. The community fishery group there has been supplying fresh fish to neighboring towns and villages in Zhemgang.

The Group formed only five years ago is already doing a brisk business. The members say the group cultivation of fish is relatively easier than other farming alternatives. The Group is also looking at mass commercial production if support is granted in the form of subsidies. The Chairman, Dorji Wangchuk, says that they have captured a good market.

The Renewable Natural Resources officials say the main challenge faced by the Bertey fish farming group is meeting the demand for fish. “At least one to two metric tonnes of fish were harvested which twice a year. But it is not enough,” said the RNR Livestock Officer, Om Bahadur Powdyel.

The Bertey fish farming group cultivates seven different types of fish.

The project was initially supported by Rural Livelihood Project under HELVETAS.
