Three years and still no proper classrooms

Classromm-Hut-Menjay-LhuentseFor the want of a bigger and better school, the entire infrastructure of Menjay Lower Secondary in Lhuentse was demolished in 2010. Three years after, instead of better and bigger classrooms, the teaching and learning is taking place in eight confined classrooms of a hut.

The school has students from class PP till grade seven. About 20 students are cramped inside each classroom. One of the teachers of Menjay Lower Secondary, Namgay Wangchuk, said the students have difficult time concentrating. “Since we have limited classrooms, when other classroom is taking class, other class is getting disturbed. And our compartment is not so strong so we hear lot of noises and gets disturbed especially while teaching,” he said.Classromm-Hut-Menjay-Lhuentse-Constrcution

Namgay Wangchuk also said during monsoon, when there is heavy rainfall, the sound from the roof disturbs the teaching.

The construction was to be complete by last month. The T & K construction’s Project Engineer, Karma Bomjan, said heavy landslide and the previous transmission lines in the construction site, delayed the project.

He said they are expecting the project to be complete in less than a year from now.

The school is expected to be upgraded up till eighth grade beginning this academic session. To accommodate the students for the new grade, the Gewog administration is to construct a similar hut. The school has more than 150 students and eight teachers.
