Bhutanese student assaulted in Pune
Jan 22 2013
A third year Bhutanese student at the Indian Law Society’s Law College in Pune, was allegedly assaulted on Sunday by some locals.
Eyewitnesses say the four locals who had assaulted the boy, had been under the influence of alcohol. The incident had taken place at about 3:30 in the afternoon. The student had been with two other Bhutanese students when the locals began teasing them first, and when they refused to react, one of the locals snatched the victim’s sunglasses and provoked him to a fight.
Some other Bhutanese students and the President of the Pune Bhutanese Student’s Association had rushed to intervene, but the fight got out of hand and local police had to be called. The BSA President told BBS the local police were more aggressive than necessary when they arrived on the scene. He said he was held by his collar and slapped by a local policeman for allegedly refusing to divulge information about the whereabouts of the victim. The BSA President said that after the fight, he genuinely had no idea where the victim had run away to, and that the victim also did not have a phone on him.
We are waiting for information from the Bhutanese Embassy on this matter, and will be bringing you more on this as and when we have new information.

I would like to thank BBS for bringing up the issue. However, i would like to add more on the subject. There were more than 4 locals and not all were drunk.
First of all, those culprits racially abused Bhutanese students by saying “Chinkey & haka noodles”. Then one gang member attempted to rob the victims google. When the victim refused to surrender the google, another gang member kicked him. He gave a defensive stand and managed to take a shelter in other Bhutanese students residence. Few minutes later, the gangs came in search for him and upon spotting the victim, broke the door which was lashed from inside and started to attack him with flower pots and iron. These are the real facts.
NOT “allegedly assault” but he was brutally battered… There are few facts which need to be highlighted :
1. Not all the four locals who attacked were drunk.
2. These locals racially abused the victim. Many other Bhutanese students are also constant victims of racial and verbal harassment
3. The victim ran after a slight scuffle but was chased till the house and then they broke the door and barged into the house and then they( 4 of them) brutally battered him right in front of the Bhutanese people who were inside the house.
4. The locals repeatedly said that they are going to kill him on the spot, so he had to again run away to save his own life since there was no one to help him, even though his country folks were there, they were helpless because the locals charged anyone who tried to help him.
5. Police were of no help, instead they slapped the BSA President twice and took him and one more Bhutanese student to the police station while the locals involved in the case were not even questioned .
6. One of the Bhutanese students managed to contact Bhutan Embassy at Delhi seeking help, however, it was of no avail. since the Deputy Chief of mission there, answered back ” i can’t give solution from my pocket, moreover you should know how to address a person to whom you are speaking”. which is something that he need not expect from a panicked caller.
It is high time for our government to do something as most Bhutanese students are often abused and harnessed by Indian locals. The time has come for our government to prioritize and consider this issue seriously as it concerns the youth of Bhutan.
Thank you BBS for making our voice heard.
May truth prevail.
To further add on to my previous comment, i would like to clarify on the fact that is given in the news above. It is true that the victim is the student of ILS but the incident didn’t take place in the college compound. It happened at Eaktanagar locality were most Bhutanese students reside.
No casualties and that is the good news. Bhutanese laws have got not jurisdiction down there. And you should know how the Indian law works. For circumstances like this,it is always wise to act little less aggressive, as we Bhutanese are found aggressive, esp. while dealing with Indians. moreover, how about some changes in attitude and personalities.
Dear narcissus,
will you please be little open minded. I do not expect such a disgrace comments when everyone is tramatized. Haven’t you realized that one day you or your next of kinship shall be subjected to such incidents. I think, however aggressive you or i maybe, the victim here (pune incident’s victim) shall be qualified to be called as ahimsa too.so, what more options are left on you if you are attempted to murder? Its obvious that i or you or whosoever, have to to defend oneself to necessity.
Forgetting all these, i,being one such student here, apprise the relevant stakeholders to take up issue seriously.
tragedy incidents are going on occurring outside the country with our citizen which is too much sad in our mind…therefore, an immediate solution should be made at the earliest by the government.
Bhutanese embassy needs to open their eyes and must act on this situation. Bhutanese those whos works and those who study in India will be not secure until the embassy comes out with solution.. We really cant resist this…its a barbaric act …… government must act now….
It is quite disheartening to hear such news, however the problems such as the above is inevitable and would happen again and again, when we have thousands of Bhutanese studying in India. The only way is to be cautious and always remain alert and do not indulge in quarrels and altercations. Remember this is not your home and you do not expect supports from anyone during odd hours. The Bhutanese Embassy in New Delhi may not be able to come to your rescue immediately. However, they would certainly come to your rescue. Please try to organize and submit the written statement through emails to the concerned authority immediately giving all details of the events and situation to the Embassy or Consulate Office immediately. Just making calls and seeking immediate help may not work, and the Embassy may not be in a position to comprehend the real situation through calls.
Keep safe dear students.
We are in different country. Its not Bhutan. We should know our duty. You can’t start saying you have right as human being. Everyone should learn how to respect when we are in someone’s land. I am also studying in India. I know what happens. I have experienced it. “Act like Roman when you are in Rome.”
What is the use of embassy if they can’t help their youth!Dont be puppets, act when you need to act remember this are the youth asking for help!! Rest assured we are not taking good memories back home!!
Our government should really take such incident seriously! We know indo-bhutan relationship should not b affected but they are our people so we need to do something for their security! i request the embassy in delhi for a clear investigation and a make it safer for all the students studying in india since they are the future of our country too, not only the ones studying inside our country!
when i was in india even i used to face such chanllenges.you should be tactful enough to handle such situations. one sad thing about the bhutanese students is that we dont have unity. most are cawards. how could you watch your friend beaten infront of you….and one important thing…dnt just hang around with only bhutanese fellows…make frnds with locals….if you have strong frndship with the locals no other locals can bully you.
As being in India Bhutanese student are facing such problem time and again,,,,,,,,so when ever there is problem than the BSA office bearer needs to take in action to solve the problem. The president, Vic president , Secretary and Treasurer are are working hard in order to solve the problem.
Those office bearer are spending from there pocket to run east, west, north and south to help the fellow Bhutanese student who ever is in need of their help…..so as a result of taking extra responsibilities for wellbeing of student abroad i on behalf of Bhutanese student would like to suggest education ministry/adult and higher education department to recognise them and provide a certificate of leadership for serving as the BSA office bearer .so this would help them in there carer where ever they go and here after the BSA office bearer will play active role beyond Ministry’s expectation if such recognition are provided.
