Customs office in Phuentsholing confiscates furniture

Sofa-Confiscated-PlingThe Regional Revenue and Customs office in Phuentsholing confiscated five sofa sets Saturday evening.

This is the first time Customs’ Officials intercepted import of furniture from India since furniture ban was imposed in March last year. While the transporter declared the goods worth Nu.60,000, the officials said it could be more.

The goods were being brought in along with hardware items in a DCM truck. The officials had received a tip off from an informer which led to physical verification of the declaration at the Regional Customs office. The furniture belonged to a furniture shop in Thimphu.

Meanwhile, the Customs office have also been intercepting third country import goods. As of now, they have in custody 19 knock down boxes worth about Nu.90, 000.

The Head of Customs and Excise in Phuentsholing, Pema Wangchen, said the confiscated goods will be auctioned once the furniture import ban has been lifted.
