Man detained for citizenship identity card scam

ParoPOliceStationPolice in Paro detained a man for scamming the authorities to obtain citizenship identity card for his non-Bhutanese wife.

In 2005, when new citizenship identity cards were being issued, the man tried to process one for his wife by making her pose as a woman from Samtse who was living with him. However, officials doubted and refused his wife citizenship identity card.

Later in 2007, he wrote to Home Ministry reporting the loss of his wife’s citizenship identity card. His lie worked and his wife was issued the card.

They then processed marriage certificate. The wife also got voter photo identity card and voted in the 2008 elections. She had also processed a Bhutanese passport and had travelled overseas as a Bhutanese national.

Paro Dzongkhag authorities discovered the scam and arrested him early this month. The case has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General.
