Student caned, mother files case against the teachers

A mother of a 19-year-old student in Sherubling Higher Secondary School, Trongsa has filed a police case against two non-national teachers of the school for having beaten-up her son last Saturday. The boy was admitted to the hospital next day. He is still undergoing treatment in the hospital.

According to the medical report the boy has suffered from blunt injuries with two stick marks on his left thigh. However, the doctor said there were no internal injuries.

The Class X student, Sangay Tenzin, said he was punched, kicked and hit by a cane stick several times by the two teachers.

One of the teachers said the boy was seen in Class XI commerce block, which was found vandalised the previous day.  The School Principal had then briefed the students not to enter the classroom. However, the teacher claimed that he had seen the boy in the classroom the next day, which they suspect him to be the culprit. “The boy had entered the classroom from the window as the door was locked,” said the teacher.

The teacher added that he had asked the boy to meet him next day but he did not turn up.  When we met ‘the boy dashed me’ said the teacher. That is where another teacher came and caught him by his hand. The teachers admitted that they canned him twice on his left thigh.

The Principal, Pem Dechen, said the boy had entered the classroom even after repeated briefings. “He has broken the school norms and tried to attack the teacher,” said the Principal. She added that the boy was given a special care and privileges in the school as he was not in good health condition. “He was suffering from backache and leg problems since long time back.”

The police said the case is under investigation. Both the teachers involved are asked to submit a written statement to the police tomorrow.
