Cow herders without thrams

Nine households in Zhombaygang, earlier known as Rittey Village, under Jigmechhoeling gewog in Sarpang say they still do not have thram of the land they live on.

They have been living in the village for more than five decades.

They say their forefathers worked for the no-poen as cowherders in olden days and happened to settle here. “But we have no thram yet and hope we will get it someday,” said Jamuna Mongar of Zhombaygang

Harka Bahadur Mongar, 33, said without the sa-thram their future is uncertain.

“Without thram we cannot avail any of the agricultural services provided by the government,” he said, adding  nor can they get timber for construction. “It is been ten years and we are still trying to get thram but now we are losing hope.”

The nine households have also applied for a resettlement programme. The Gup of Jigmechhoeling Gewog, Sherab Jamtsho, said he received application from the nine households twice requesting for registering the sa- thram in their name or a resettlement programme.

He said the Gross National Happiness Commission is planning to help resettle the people of the nine households in a place called Goong under the same gewog.
