Trashigang district hospital sees increasing number of miscarriages

Trashigang district hospital saw the highest number of miscarriage cases in the month of May this year. Five cases were reported that month. The hospital receives at least one cases of miscarriage every month taking the number to 23 this year alone.

“The abortion that occurs after three months is usually because of underlining health condition of the mother, like diabetes and other infections like sexually transmitted disease. It can also occur because of abnormality of womb,” said the Gynecologist, Pema Choden.

Out of 23 cases reported, 16 of them had to be operated to save the mother’s life.

“The cases of abortion that came to me so far were not because of unwanted pregnancy. There was not even a single case so far but we don’t know how many go unreported,” said Pema Choden. She also said abortion is a matter of concern and if it is not reported on time it could lead to the death of a mother.

According to the gynecologist, apart from other reasons, drinking and smoking during pregnancy can also increase the risk of miscarriage.
