Resurfacing of Bathpalathang airport begins

The Department of Civil Aviation has started the resurfacing works of Bathpalathang airport. It is scheduled to be complete within two months.

Two-inch thick surface of special dense concrete is being laid on top of the existing pitch.

The resurfacing is expected to make the landing and take-off of an aircraft easy. The resurfacing works could not be completed during the initial phase of construction due to budget and resource constraints.

According to the officials with the civil aviation, about 20 percent of the work has been complete.

The project will cost the government Nu. 33 million.

Drukair had suspended its flights to the Bathpalathang airport in July, citing safety concerns, based on gravel coming loose off the runway surface during flight operations, and unevenness of the runway.

The Department of Civil Aviation is anticipating the re-launch of domestic air services to Bumthang only after the overlay works are complete.
