Number of yaks and sheep declining

The number of yaks and sheep in the country is declining with the passing year.

As per the records maintained by the Regional Livestock Development Centre, the number of yaks in Lhuentse decreased from 456 in 2006 to 223 in 2010. In Trashigang, the number came down to 7,094 in 2010 from 11,683 in 2006. Likewise in Trashiyangtse the number decreased to 588 in 2010 from 595 in 2006.

Regional Livestock Officials from six different eastern dzongkhags -Monggar, Trashigang, Trashiyangtse, Pemagatshel, Lhuentse and Samdrup Jongkhar are working together in Kanglung to come up with a solution to address the issue.

The three days workshop is organised by the Kanglung Regional Livestock Development Center.
