Government houses abandoned for over a decade

Two huge concrete houses at Dakphey, which falls along the highway between Zhemgang and Tingtibi, have been left to rot for one reason or another by the Food Corporation of Bhutan and the Dzongkhag Authority. Located 22 kilometres away from Zhemgang, these houses have eight rooms including two big storage rooms.

People living in the vicinity say it has been over 10 years since the buildings have been abandoned. The houses were constructed in early 90s. “It is such a waste of government resources,” said Karma Tsheltrim who lives nearby the houses.

The former gup, Rinchen Drakpa said the people from Kheng region could benefit if the houses are rented out.

The houses were constructed to store food items from World Food Program for schools and were once used as the food security reserve storage.

The Regional Manager of Central Region Food cooperation, Ugyen Choedup, said the houses were not renovated due to lack of laborers. “We have plans to use the houses as cash crops transit store.” He said the houses will be repaired soon.
