PM awarded Honorary Doctorate and Humanitarian Awards

The Prime Minister Jigmi Y.Thinley was awarded the Humanitarian Award 2012 by Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences. Lyonchhoen was also awarded the Honorary Doctorate by Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology today.

Anne F.Stenhammer, the Regional Director of the UN women, South Asia, presented the awards to Lyonchhoen in the presence of 16,500 students and other guests.

“The award is instituted to honour and recognise individuals with remarkably high contribution to the society in diverse fields relating to social concern and who have distinguished themselves as true humanitarians,” said Dr Achyuta Samantha, the founder of the institutes.

Lyonchhoen said he is honoured to receive the award as it comes from an institute that is successful in realising its noble humanitarian visions of bringing coveted realm of higher and excellent education within the grasp of the deprived.

The institute has successfully reduced the drop-out rates to zero. Lyonchhoen also graced the convocation ceremony of the Kalinga Institue of Industrial Technology.

While accepting the Honorary Doctorate, Lyonchhoen expressed his gratitude for receiving an award from a renowned institute such as Kalinga. He said Bhutanese institutes, which are young at the moment, can learn from the Institute in order to excel at developing professional courses.

The Bhutanese students also celebrated Lyonchhoen’s birthday before the convocation began.
