Government decides to discontinue gaydrungs from LG functionary

Gaydrungs or Gewog clerks will no longer be a part of the Local Government functionary by next month. This comes after the government decided to finally discontinue their post following deliberations in the Cabinet in consultation with the Home Ministry and the Royal Civil Service Commission.

The Prime Minister issued an Executive Order on Wednesday informing gaydrungs to hand over their responsibility to the Gewog offices within this month. The directive says it is to streamline public service delivery by emphasising professionalism, leadership and innovations in local governance.

The executive order further states that the government would provide additional manpower to gewog offices in the future depending on the initiatives taken by gewog officials. Gaydrungs were last given a three-year contract by the Cabinet in 2019.

Meanwhile, through the order, the gewog leaders are reminded to redesign the overall structure of the organisation, redefine roles and responsibilities, and ensure the engagement of gewog administrative officers to the maximum.

As a traditional post of clerk for Gups, gaydrungs have served the purpose of assisting the gewog administration over the years. They were involved in collecting tax and insurance premiums, drafting letters, maintaining official records, and dealing with applications and agreements when the local offices were out of the station, among others.

RCSC’s Organisational Development Exercise in 2016 found their post irrelevant. There are around 200 Gaydrungs across the country today.
