Farmers to give hazelnut a second try

Many hazelnut saplings were distributed and planted in Pemagatshel last year. But the plants, much to the disappointment of the farmers, did not grow well. Even then, the farmers say, they are willing to give a second try.

The saplings were distributed and planted with the help of Hazelnut Project.

“We first saw hazelnut tree in Monggar and after some officials explained to us the benefit of hazelnut, we thought we will give it a hand. But it did not turn out the way we had expected,” said a farmer, Dorji Gyeltshen. He said they will give the project another go. “This time we will plant the saplings in a larger quantity.”

According to the local committee member, the plants didn’t grow well due to lack of rainfall last year. Still then, he said most people in Zobel Gewog, are showing a keen interest in the project.

“Other crops are getting destroyed by wild animals. Hazelnut, on the other hand, is easier to manage. The return is also good. I think the prospect of earning a steady income from such project is what is sparking the interest among the farmers,” said a committee member, Sangay.

For now, the hazelnut project has been started in the four gewogs of Pemagatshel.
