UN day observed

Oct 26, 2010

The United Nations day is celebrated on October 24 every year. In Bhutan, the day was observed at the Tashichhodzong in Thimphu yesterday. One thousand butter lamps were lit to mark the day at the Kuenray.

Monks from the central monastic body led by the Drabai Lopen recited prayers for the peace and prosperity of the country, the King, the People and the world at large.

Addressing the gathering, the Finance Minister, Lyonpo Wangdi Norbu, said Bhutan has always been firm in its support of the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. He said Bhutan always endeavour to be an active and responsible member through the involvement in numerous important bodies of the UN. He also highlighted some of the challenges that the world faces.

The Resident Co-ordinator of the United Nations, Claire Van der Vaeren, also addressed the gathering.

The Members of Parliament, senior government officials and Representatives from other organisations took part in lighting the butter lamps.

As part of the celebrations an annual inter-school quiz competition was held in Punakha in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Students from Gasa and Punakha took part in the competition.

The United Nations day has been celebrated since 1948.
