Vegetable production in Bumthang gaining momentum

Vegetable production in Bumthang is booming. The locals say, it has been over five years now since the improvement. They are now aiming for mass commercial production.

Bumthang dzongkhag produces almost all kinds of vegetable.  Potato, chilly, beans, carrots, cabbage and cauliflower are some of the locally grown vegetables sold in Bumthang’s weekend market.

Our reporter Komal Kharka says, vegetable production has become one of the major businesses for the farmers in Bumthang.  They don’t import a single vegetable from outside during summer season.

Potato is widely produced and is one of the main cash crops in Bumthang. At this time of the year, farmers are busy harvesting potatoes. The produced are supplied to Phuentsholing in bulk.

The support from the government, favorable weather condition, farm mechanization, green house practices and improved varieties of seeds are said to be the factors contributing to this progress.

“Three years from now we think we can supply vegetables in large scale and become self reliant,” says Sangay, a farmer in Bumthang.

High altitude, cold temperature and frost in winter can be a problem for vegetable production. But the farmers use green house method of farming during winter.
