Relocation of Sarpangtar to Sheychamthang promises better prospects

Once the construction of Sarpang Dzong completes, it would house the dzongkhag administration and become the summer residence of Sarpang Rabdey. Stating that the Sarpangtar town, which is nearby the dzong would be unsuitable, the Dzongkhag Business Development Committee is proposing the relocation of the town. And people who operate businesses in the town welcomed the initiative.

During the economic affairs minister’s recent visit to Sarpang, members proposed the minister for relocation of the town to Sheychamthang, the new satellite town. They said a town near the dzong would not look appealing

On the other hand, Sheychamthang is slowly becoming a business hub of Sarpang. Secretary of the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Regional Office Kelzang said the satellite town has access to road links which makes a better town.

“Soon, there will be streetlights and banking facilities as well. So, it will become the main business hub in the dzongkhag,” he said.

Lyonpo Loknath Sharma welcomed the proposal.

“I see no issue in the relocation. I think it can be done,” the Lyonpo said.  He also agreed to take the matter to a higher authority.

And it is also good news to the businessmen there. They said as much as people benefit from this, they will also reap better prospects.

One of the shopkeepers, TejBadhurPokrel said as much as it benefits the shoppers, they can also reap benefits from the relocation.

“Currently, people either go to Gelephu for shopping, but if Sheychamthang grows, people won’t go to Gelephu as they can have access to everything from one location,” he added.

Today, about 15 people operate the business at Sarpangtar. Sheychamthang town is some three and a half kilometres from Sarpangtar.

Meanwhile, the construction of the Sarpang Dzong is about 48 per cent complete. Began in 2017, it is expected to complete in 2024.
