Tashi Phuntsho, a 16-year-old boy from Zhemgang who earlier claimed he was kidnapped and sold off to a hotel in the Indian city of Mumbai has retracted his story.

Police in Zhemgang, after investigation found Tashi Phuntsho had stolen a mobile phone from one of his teachers a week before he went missing. He confessed to stealing and told the police that he went to Mumbai on his own. He told he had always wanted to go to Delhi and Mumbai.

The boy went missing from Zhemgang in September last year. Earlier Tashi Phuntsho said he was kidnapped by two men and a woman on his way from school in a Toyota Hilux. He said he was drugged and when he woke up he found himself in a hotel in Mumbai.

In April, Tashi managed to escape from work and went to a police station in Mumbai. He was then admitted to Dongri Child Home in Mumbai.  The Mumbai Police then informed the Bhutanese embassy officials in New Delhi.

Tashi Phuntsho was reunited with his family in Zhemgang last May.
