Sunkosh hydropower to be intergovernmental model

The Sunkosh hydropower project with the capacity of 2,560 megawatt will be implemented under the intergovernmental model.  This was one of the issues agreed upon, during the 9th Empowered Joint Group Meeting, which was held in the capital today.

The members of the empowered joint group also agreed to release funds for the pre-construction works of the hydropower project.

The Chairman of the group, Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk, said the construction of road and bridges from Indo-Bhutan border to the project sites will be taken up by the Department of Road. He added the construction works on the Indian side will be taken up by the Indian Government.

The meeting also saw discussions on the four joint venture hydropower projects, Chamkhar Chu, Kholong Chu, Wangchu and Bunakha.  “The joint venture agreement between the partners of two governments should be finalized. However, there are a few disagreements between the partners. So we have decided that a representative from the Indian and the Bhutanese government should discuss the disagreements,” said Lyonpo khandu Wangchuk.

The four joint venture projects are expected to begin this year.
