Jaigaon lockdown from tomorrow

Jaigaon, the neighbouring Indian town across Phuentshogling, will be under a complete lockdown for six days beginning tomorrow.

Block development officials took the decision after 17 people tested positive for the Nobel Coronavirus on Saturday. The 17 individuals detected with the virus include police and health officials. The patients are being treated in Tapsikhata COVID-19 hospital, located about 55 kilometers from Jaigoan town.

Reports of possible community transmission have left people in Jaigaon as well as in Phuentshogling worried. However, as of now, life in Phuentshogling continues with most people using facemasks in public spaces.

Since the first case was detected on June 7, Jaigaon has reported 25 confirmed cases of COVID-19 so far. Three deaths due to the virus were also reported from Jaigaon, Dalsingpara and Hashimara.

According to sources, despite the lockdown in Jaigaon, import and export along the border in Phuentsholing will not be affected.

Jaigaon is located in the Indian state of West Bengal, where over 75000 cases of COVID-19 has been reported so far.
