Schools observe Menstrual Hygiene Day

To observe Menstrual Hygiene Day, 32 schools under Thimphu Thromde conducted a door to door awareness campaign in their school locality today.

With the theme, ‘time for action’ students divided into groups, visited each and every household near their schools briefing them on how to safely store and dispose of the sanitary pads. They also distributed sanitary disposal bags.

We have children coming from different backgrounds in the school. With such an awareness campaign, children take those messages back home,” Dawa Tshering, the Principal of Zhilukha MSS, said.

“I think it is important for the community to know that our sanitary waste if not dispose of properly, is not good for health. So today, the children briefed the community about the segregating and disposing of properly,” Yangchen  Dema, the School Health coordinator of Zhilukha MSS, said.

The day was observed in schools across the country with the Red dot campaign. The program was initiated by the School Health and Nutrition Division under the Ministry of Education jointly with the UNICEF Bhutan.

The Menstrual Hygiene Day was first observed globally on May 28 in 2014. Bhutan started observing the day from 2015.
