OAG to appeal against Punakha court’s rape judgment

The Punakha District Court convicted a man, who raped his six-year-old stepdaughter, of statutory rape and sentenced him to 16 years in prison early this month.

While the actual prison term given is 15 years, one more year was added in lieu of compensation money of Nu 45,000, which the court ordered him to pay to the victim.

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is not satisfied with the judgment and is seeking to appeal to the High Court.

The OAG says the crime the 39-year-old man committed is grave and falls under the category of the heinous act as per the country’s penal code.

Thus, the OAG says the convict should be punished with the maximum prison term.

The OAG also stated he should be made to pay the compensation money to the victim by any means.
