Mobile app to promote bamboo launched

A  mobile app designed to promote bamboo housing and use of bamboo in constructions instead of timber was launched in Thimphu yesterday.

Called BAMTECH, the app was developed by the South Asia Bamboo Foundation (SABF) in collaboration with the Handicrafts Association of Bhutan (HAB) and the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI).

It is expected to help in creating awareness on the availability of different species of bamboo in the country. The app will also provide information on other aspects of bamboo.

“Around 36 species of bamboo grow in Bhutan and with the world recognizing bamboo as a timber substitute, the app will help in creating awareness on bamboo processing, treatment, and selections among others,” Kamesh Salam, the Founder and Executive Director of the SABF, said.

“We have been working with bamboo for a long time, but we have not really understood the species. With this new bamboo app, I am quite hopeful that it will encourage our youth to carry out bamboo related activities,” Chorten Dorji, the Executive Director of HAB, said.

The app is available on the Google play store.
