ECB assures safety of postal votes

The Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) said postal voting is safe and secure as the commission renewed its MoU with the Bhutan Postal Corporation Limited.

The postal ballots are sent by mail to respective constituencies for which the ECB and Bhutan Post had signed a MoU. It is renewed before every election.

Along with the MoU, a standard operating procedure is also drawn.

“The Returning Officers open the postal ballot envelopes in the presence of the candidate or the representative of the candidate. If the envelope is damaged and candidates are doubtful about its security, that particular ballot is rejected,” Namgay Tshering, the Head of Postal Ballot Administration Unit of the ECB said.

The same applies to votes from the facilitation booths. Namgay Tshering says it’s equally safe and secure.

“The envelopes are packed in the presence of the presiding officers, observers, candidates or candidate representatives, RBP personnel and postmasters before they are taken to the post office,” he said.

He added people can track their postal ballots through an application called ‘track your EMS package’ by going to the website of the Bhutan Post.

As of today, more than a hundred thousand people have registered for postal ballot facilities.
