Turning plastic waste into bags -Trongsa

These days, almost all imported goods come in plastic packaging. And after using the product or consuming it, the plastics are dumped in a landfill. The plastic wastes then take years to decompose. So, to minimise the waste going to the landfill and the import of plastic bags, a month-long handloom weaving program using plastic is underway in Trongsa.

BoB admits system failure and accepts Nu 6.2 Million penalty

Admitting there was a system failure, the Bank of Bhutan says it accepts the penalty handed down by the central bank earlier this month. The Royal Monetary Authority slapped a fine of nearly Nu 6.2 M against the bank after BoB’s system shut down completely for almost three days earlier this month. The bank has submitted a justification for the failure and is awaiting the final response from the Central Bank regarding the penalty.

RCSC’s yearlong Nurturing Leadership Programme ends

For the Royal Civil Service Commission (RCSC), leadership development intervention is regarded as a critical component at this juncture when the civil service is undergoing a major transformation. In line with this, more than 120 principals and vice principals from the education sector, and executives working in various government agencies have been trained under the “Nurturing Leadership Programme.” The programme has marked its closure this morning.

Developed nations should reduce emissions: Foreign Minister at general debate of UN General Assembly

In his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York last night, Foreign Minister Dr Tandi Dorji reiterated that the developed nations should reduce emissions. In addition, the minister said the developed and large emitters should help vulnerable countries adapt to climate change and deal with the consequences.

Sign language, a key to inclusion for the deaf community

Road blocks impede timely delivery of cash crops in Kangpar Gewog, Trashigang

Farm road realignment resumes commercial farming – Pema Gatshel

Farmers in Ridzommo chiwog at Dechhenling Gewog in Pema Gatshel resumed commercial farming after more than three years. This was made possible after the gewog administration realigned the farm road last year. The farm road constructed in 2017 was completely washed away by a landslide within a year due to the unstable soil.

Poor landfill management leaves residents of Umtoedkha fuming- Punakha 

Residents of Umtoedkha in Lingmukha Gewog of Punakha have long been bothered by the landfill site in their village, which is poorly managed. According to them, the garbage heaps attract cattle to consume toxic wastes that result in their deaths. The chiwog is now requesting the concerned agencies to address the matter at the earliest.

Need for a youth centre in Tsirang

Youth are considered the driving force for change. And for them to bring about that change, they need platforms to come together and spend their time productively. As such, youth in Tsirang, during Bhutan Centre for Media and Democracy’s youth summit, raised the need for a youth centre in the district.

Cultivation of dragon fruit gaining popularity- P/Gatshel

Growing Dragon fruit which began as a relatively new practice for farmers is gradually becoming more popular in some parts of the country. In Pema Gatshel, a trained farmer is now planning to grow the fruit on a larger scale after realizing there is a good business prospect in cultivating the fruit. Dragon fruit is regarded as a healthy food with high vitamin C, fibres and antioxidants.
