Zhemgang District Court refers the Goshing Gup’s case to the High Court

The Zhemgang District Court decides to refer the alleged embezzlement case involving the Goshing Gup to the High Court to avoid conflict of interest as the same case was prosecuted by the present Zhemgang drangpon while he was in the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).

Monggar District Court sentences 16 men and eight women to six months in prison for breaching COVID protocols

The Monggar District Court sentenced 16 men from Ngatshang Gewog and eight women from Saling Gewog in Monggar to six months in prison for breaching the COVID-19 protocols during the second nationwide lockdown. While the men were convicted for playing archery in Ngatshang Gewog, the women were sentenced for playing khuru during the Nyilo on January 2.

Thrompons of Thimphu, Gelegphu and Phuentshogling will vacate their office tomorrow on completion of their five-year term. However, they won't be allowed to campaign even if they are planning to run for the office again. This will also apply to all the aspiring candidates for the upcoming thromde local elections. According to the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB), the election campaigns shall be permitted only after the announcement by the commission calling the local government elections.

Judiciary records an increase of over a hundred pending cases compared to the previous year

Nearly 7,000 cases were registered last year according to the Annual Judiciary Report of 2020. The total case pending for 2020 stood at 2,873 cases of which 342 cases are pending for more than a year. It is an increase of over a hundred cases compared to the previous year. The complexities of cases, inability to trace witnesses and absconding respondents are some of the reasons for the cases pending for more than a year.

An international standard volleyball court under construction at Changlimithang

Changlimithang will have two fully furnished synthetic floored volleyball court and a beach volleyball court with proper lighting, locker rooms for players and bathroom facilities by the end of June next year. For now, the sport is played on dry and dusty earth during the winter and in mud puddles during the monsoon. To resolve these issues, the Bhutan Volleyball Federation (BVF) started redeveloping the entire volleyball court near the Changlimithang National Stadium. 

Rice import by FCB doubles amid the pandemic

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and two nationwide lockdowns in the country, the rice import last year has doubled compared to previous years. The Food Corporation of Bhutan (FCB) alone imported around 24,000 metric tonnes of rice in 2020, up from 10,000 metric tons in 2019.

Rabies outbreak in Samtse

An outbreak of rabies is confirmed in Samtse town after another dog was found with rabies yesterday. The district livestock office also reported several cases in the vicinity of Samtse town where a rabid dog has bitten other dogs. Given the dangers of cross-border transmission of rabies, a rabies vaccination drive along the border areas began earlier this month.
