During a three-day workshop on roles of films and documentaries in promoting regional tourism, local filmmakers were urged to work towards producing films of international standard.

Reviving SAFTA, to boost trade among SAARC Countries

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries endorsed South Asia Free Trade Area agreement (SAFTA) in 2006. However, the implementation of the agreement has been slow till date. Officials from the commerce chambers of the SAARC region cited lack of co-ordination and trust as the main hindrance for the slow implementation.

Toilets improve Rukha villagers’ sanitation and hygiene

With the introduction of modern toilets the lives of people of Rukha village in Wangdue Phodrang, one of the remote villages in the Dzongkhag, have improved significantly. The locals said they have better sanitation and hygiene compared to previous years.

To provide support to the farmers by creating ready market for their produce, Farmers Roadside Shop was inaugurated at Dengzor in Orong Gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar. The JICA’s Chief Representative, Yumiko Asakuma, and Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongda graced the inauguration. The total cost for constructing the shop is about Nu. 1.2 million. It was funded by JICA.

Tashi Commercial Corporation wins the legal battle

The legal battle between Thimphu Thromde and Tashi Commercial Corporation finally comes to an end with Tashi Commercial Corporation officially taking over the taxi parking area. The handing-taking of the land was done after the Supreme Court passed the verdict in favor of Tashi Commercial Corporation in August.

Domestic violence against women increasing

The statistics show the cases of domestic violence against women in the country are on the rise. According to the records maintained with RENEW, a Civil Society Organisation that stands for Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women, more than 1,217 domestic violence cases have been reported from 2008 to 2012.

Let us supply cement outside designated areas: Cement Dealers

Most Dungsam cement dealers across the country feel that they should be allowed to supply cement outside their designated areas. The contract agreement between the dealers and Dungsam Cement Corporation says, they are only to deal with customers within the purview.
