2 arrested for possessing tobacco products

Two men, 30 and 19, were apprehended by the Thimphu Police for carrying tobacco products beyond permissible quantity. The two were caught in a regular vehicle check-up at Changbangdu on Saturday night.

Hindu community observe Maha Shivratri

Thousands of devotees of Lord Shiva flocked at Khopi-Khola Mahakal Dham Shiv Mandir in Phuentsholing to worship the Lord on the occasion of Maha Shivratri today. The festival has been accorded with a lot of significance in Hindu mythology and is considered very auspicious.

Lhuentse Shopkeepers yet to get their drawings approved

Construction works at the new town in Lhuentse is yet to begin. Except for the steel railings and some stones piled up, the site is barren without any infrastructures. Shopkeepers who were allotted plots at the new town site say they are yet to receive their house drawings approved by the Ministry of Works and Human Settlements.

Reaching the unreached

For the first time in history, World Radio Day was observed this week on February 13. The day also marked the anniversary of UN radio which was launched in 1946. In Bhutan Radio was launched in 1973. Ever since then it has played an instrumental role in disseminating information and bringing people together as one nation.

Only 7 out of 26 completed

Farm road constructions in Lhuentse Dzongkhag are not completed as planned in the 10th Five Year Plan. Out of the 26 farm roads under construction so far, only seven farm roads have been completed. As a result, the Planning Officer says that more than Nu .98 million has been left as outstanding bill pending.

Firewood consumption high

Firewood continues to be a preferred form of energy consumption in Bhutanese households. As per the government report, about 91% of energy demand for cooking and heating is met from use of bio-fuels and other conventional resources.

More cars, no fuel depot in Jomotshangkha

The number of cars in Jomotsangkha town under Samdrupjongkhar Dzongkhag has been on the rise, but ironically, there is no fuel depot there. Our reporter, Kinzang Yeshi, who recently visited the town, says that there are about 70 cars belonging to business people and the civil servants there. Just a few years ago there were only about 10 private cars and one could tell whose car it was.

Farmers’ Group to supply vegetables

A Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, was signed between the Drepong Farmers’ Group known as Puen Gu and Gyalpoizhing Higher Secondary School in Monggar to establish a link to supply vegetables to the school.

Sacred relic returns to Bhutan

The tooth relic of Lord Buddha or Sangay Woedsung was returned yesterday by a 13-member delegation from Thailand, including the two ministers attached to the Prime Minister's Office in Thailand and the Vice Minister of Health.The relic was kept in Thailand for about a month.
